Locking Up

Sometimes you're the last one to leave the space, and if you are, you are RESPONSIBLE for locking up and checking that the space is secure. This is part of the deal with being a member.

General

Do lock up and turn off lights and heaters when you are the last out.

What can be left on?

AC and sufficient lights for safety can be left on. See details below.

What if I can't get the door(s) to lock?

  • Please don't leave until you have closed the loop with someone who is taking care of the problem.
  • Fixing it yourself would be superb.
  • Send an email to [email protected] explaining the problem.
  • If you can, leave a message on the #triage channel on Slack
  • Send an email to the board: [email protected]
  • Send a message to the president, or the General Area Host: [email protected] or [email protected]
  • If you have any of the usual "always around, always doing stuff" people in your contacts, phone or text them directly.
  • Don't leave a note on the outside of the door explaining that it is unlocked. Let's keep that between members.

How do I know if I'm the last one?

Part of leaving is verifying this. Walk the circle around from the entrance to the loading dock and back the other way, and check the upstairs. Check bathrooms, they either have a "VACANT/OCCUPIED" door handle, or you can knock. Take a peek out on the catwalk, for good measure.

What about the heat or air conditioners?

  • Generally, we leave the AC on in the 'interior' spaces 24/7 and adjust it with the thermostat, never turning it to full, hard "off" but rather picking a temperature to hold below.
  • Leave the AC on.
  • Likewise, the thermostat for the heater will control the heat, and should never allow the shop space or any other interior space to freeze. It's fine to leave the heat on when it's cold.

What about the lights?

  • Leave enough light on that you can safely make your way through all the tools and equipment of the space. There is usually one light in each of the shop spaces left on for safety's sake.
  • Small rooms that have light switches near the entrance can be darkened (lights off) completely. The Lounge, CNC, Kitchen, Electronics and Arts & Crafts are examples.
