  • main concerns
    • alcohol & minor policy
      • we had existing policies
    • loaned tools
    • general liability
      • on the board
      • on ps1 generally
        • pretty-well covered
      • on authorizers, loaned tool owners
    • maintenance & record-keeping
      • always asked about, when there are legal concerns over injuries
    • privacy & document security
    • building access
    • tool authorization
  • insurance
    • one layer of protection for the space, in addition to the solutions to the
  • above
    • loaned tool stuff
      • we need an insurance policy that says that tool owners are additionally
    • insured
        • so if there's an accident with a tool & someone sues, we want ps1's
      • insurance to cover the legal fees
      • we're considering a loaned tool policy, but that by itself can't
    • won't help people who are sued
    • current status
      • current insurance is inadequate
        • holes we need to fill
      • lawyer gave two recommendations
        • one actually knows what a makerspace is
          • has requirements we can't fill
            • need to have 'project approval process'
              • each one verified by the board
            • 24-hour supervision
              • would amount to an employee
              • if they were members, they wouldn't be able to work on
            • anything while supervising
        • other one's going to call back
      • alternatively: make list of demands to give to current insurance
    • provider
        • need to come up with list of demands
        • need to know what our current policy covers
          • lawyer did an analysis of our current things, but we need to
        • find it
          • would dovetail well with a packet of nonprofit stuff we can
        • hand to people (companies) to see if they'll give us free stuff
      • alternatively still: talk to andrew's insurance provider
        • they gave his company insurance, which is at least as negligent as
      • we are
        • they gave some other space insurance
      • this one guy knows a good insurance guy who specializes in nonprofits
    • can we come up with a timeline for dealing with the insurance situation by
  • the end of the year?
      • need this because we're going to have a new board next year
        • all effort might get lost
    • one issue is that even if we get insurance, if something goes wrong & they
  • come & look around & we don't have good procedures/policies in place, they'll
  • freak out & it'll be worse
  • insurance is one layer of protection
    • there's a federal volunteer protection act
      • doesn't prevent someone from being sued, which is expensive even if it
    • isn't successful
    • 'mitigation of risk is a process'
  • to do
    • make a list of requirements for insurance
