If you remember old-school gaming systems, then you're probably familiar with 8-bit music.  There's now a Commodore 128 at the space, and the presence of such vintage hardware has inspired [[User:Nicolle | me]] to try my hand at composing 8-bit music.

Concept

If you remember old-school gaming systems, then you're probably familiar with 8-bit music. There's now a Commodore 128 at the space, and the presence of such vintage hardware has inspired me to try my hand at composing 8-bit music.

At this point i'm doing it in Commodore BASIC, since the BASIC 7.0 on the C128 has a fairly robust set of commands for editing waveforms, tones, and rhythms. However, i plan on learning how to program sounds in machine language at some point. That probably won't be until after geek prom, though.

Geek Prom

i am planning to have an 8-bit music exhibit at Geek Prom. Best case scenario, the disk drive will be working by then, and i can bring the C128 there and play my music on honest-to-God old school hardware (saved on sexy, sexy 5 1/4" floppies). However, if the disk drive doesn't work, i can have at most one program typed into the memory of the computer at once...and no way to save, since there's no hard drive on it. Worst case scenario, i'll play my compositions on a box running VICE (a Commodore emulator).

...will be posted here after Geek Prom. If you *really* want to spoil the surprise, come by the space, and you'll probably catch me hunched over the C128, hacking away and coaxing bleeps, blips, and bloops out of it.
