Description

The Ironworking Station is a set of tools that allow simple shearing and bending operations to be performed in mild steel bar (or softer metals). Within their intended use range, these tools will make faster cleaner cuts than attempting to use a hand grinder or bandsaw. The Ironworking Station is comprised of several discrete tools mounted on a common stand. Th Ironworking Station currently consists of:

  • Whitney No 4 angle iron shear
    • max capacity 2inch x 2 inch x 1/4 inch mild steel angle iron, or 2inch x 1/4 inch bar stock
  • Whitney No 62 angle iron shear
    • max capacity 3 inch x 3 inch x 1/4 inch mild steel angle iron, or 3inch x 1/4 inch bar stock
  • Whitney No 50 Angle iron notcher
    • max capacity 2inch x 2 inch x 1/4 inch mild steel angle iron, or 2inch x 1/4 inch bar stock
  • Whitney No51 Angle iron bender
    • max capacity 2inch x 2 inch x 1/4 inch mild steel angle iron, or 2inch x 1/4 inch bar stock
  • Whitney No61 angle Iron Bender
    • max capacity 3 inch x 3 inch x 3/8 inch mild steel angle iron, or 2inch x 1/4 inch bar stock
  • Edwards 5a Alligator shear
    • max capacity 4inch x 1/2 inch mild steel bar stock, or 3/4 inch mild steel round stock
  • Whitney No20 20 ton punch
    • max capacity 1/2in hole in 1/2in thick bar (wider holes in thinner stock possible).
    • configured with 5/16 punch to make clearance holes for 1/4 fasterners
    • tucker has additional punches and will work with you to get correct sized punches for your project if needed
  • Whitney rod cutter:
    • Needs rapir: die plate damaged
    • 5/16, 1/2 or 3/4 inch mild steel rod.
  • Marvel rod cutter
    • 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 mild steel rod

tool dangers

Warning: The listed dangers here are not exhaustive: it is your responsibility to assess each operation you perform at the Ironworking Station to determine any safety risks it may present, and take appropriate steps to mitigate those risks.

  • pinch points
    • The various tools at the Ironworking Station use gears and leverage to shear and bend metal bars. If you get your fingers in the mechanism, they can get crushed or nipped off.
    • Always ensure that NO ONE has body parts near the tools when they are operating.
  • flying metal
    • The various tools at the Ironworking Station use leverage to generate high forces. The blades of the tools and the workpieces may fracture sending metal fragments airborn.
  • sharp edges
    • The tools in the Ironworking Station may leave sharp edges on the metal. These edges can cut you.

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Required
    • Safety glasses
    • close toed shoes
  • Recommended
    • gloves
    • long pants
    • long sleeved shirt

Prohibited operations

  • Working with Stainless Steel
  • Working with abrasives (e.g. fiberglass, sandpaper etc.) If in doubt, ask the area host or tool owner
  • Working with wood
  • cutting through weld bead or weld spatter.
  • Shearing angle thicker than 2 inch x 2 inch x ¼ inch on the Whitney angle iron shear
  • Notching bars thicker than ¼ inch on the Whitney notcher
  • bending bars thicker than ¼ inch or grater than 2 inch wide on the Whitney bender
  • Shearing flat bars thicker than ½ inch, on the Edwards Alligator Shear
  • Shearing rods thicker than 3/4” on the Edwards Alligator Shear

Note: Operations not explicitly prohibited in this document may be performed at the user’s risk. It is recommended that the user contact the area host or tool owner prior to performing unusual operations with the tool in order to get feedback on the proposed operation.
