Configuration

  • Secondary electron detector (functional)
  • 4 quadrant silicon backscatter detector (non-functional, troubleshooting in progress)
  • Oxford Isis EDX detector (non-functional, requires liquid nitrogen to operate)

Certification

This is probably the most complex piece of equipment we own. As such, certification will be broken into different levels with different tasks one can perform.

Unlike other PS:One equipment where anyone certified can certify something else, at present the only person who may grant certification is Ryan Pierce. We anticipate we will have additional trainers in the near future.

Microscope User

This level enables the user to observe samples already prepared and placed in the chamber. Users at this certification level may:

  • Observe samples already left in the chamber.
  • Observe their own samples if prepared by someone with Sample Preparer certification.
  • Adjust beam current and aperture.

Users only possessing this certification may not:

  • Adjust gun alignment
  • Vent the chamber
  • Open the chamber / manipulate samples
  • Change gun filaments or adjust anything about the gun

Sample Preparer

Curriculum in progress. The sputter coater will need to be ready for use before this can be put into full swing.

Microscope Maintainer

Maintainers perform all maintenance on the microscope, including:

  • Changing filaments
  • Aligning the gun
  • Installing the low kV anode for high res low voltage imaging
  • Adjusting software configuration
  • Anything involving disassembly
