New People

New People (name - where did you hear about us - what do you make/hack)

  • Laurel | Welder, likes to make things with metal, lamps, functional things, mixing metals, steel, copper, aluminum, etc. | learned about from Keon, who works at the Recyclery
  • Sarah | works with metal, making art type things | Laurel's daughter
  • Drew | Architecture background, knitting, woodworking, metal, newer to metal and wood, wants to make a coffee table | found out about us through Will G. at the Maker's Lab at the library
  • Veronica | in Chicago for the summer, doing an internship with Radio Flyer | runs maker space at Georgia Tech | wants to be a toy designer | making a walking music box, made an R/C viking ship | googled "Chicago Maker Space"
  • Tyler | found us through Meetup | with an startup working on UAV and robotics for humanitarian purposes
  • Regan | interested in woodworking | found us online
  • Adam | interested in woodworking, has worked with raspberry pi, 3D printers, etc. | googled maker space in Chicago

Awesome Callouts

  • Jonny for cleaning up the woodshop. He even cleaned underneath

  • Andrew, Matt, Matt, and Ken for realigning the shopbot
  • Matt for conducting shopbot authorization and letting it be filmed

Things that need doing around the space

  • Make sure that the dumpster can be closed. If it's too full, it won't be taken and we get fined $200.
  • Clean the kitchen! Don't leave dishes in the sink. Run the dishwasher, unload it.
    • Clean the sink too! Also the bathroom sinks.
  • Check both of the dust collector bins before working
  • Make sure the bandsaw blade is not on upside down

What have you been hacking

  • Will made a handheld coin operated pong machine
  • Arturo went through ~10 kbluetooth eyboards to find one that would work with Raspberry Pi 3
    • Kensington brand was the winner
  • Aushra made a bronze cast piece of bark with a lost wax process
  • Greg glued fish to his laptop. They're not sea creatures, instead they're copper plate, hand cut and inlaid with black termaline and mother of pearl.
  • Lyn made a purple poncho / cloak

Announcements

  • Saturday is Lyn's birthday!
  • Tabletop game night is Saturday too, 5 pm in the lounge. There will be cake!
  • Extruder party & 3D printer extravaganza will be Saturday, 1 - 6 pm
    • Bring your printers, we'll be printing here in the space, there will be a competition
    • Free, with $10 recommended donation - fundraiser for the space.
  • Tool cage improvements will happen weekly through the summer, new labels are on their way.
    • As labels appear, please use them. If you see things around the shop, put them away.
    • If you're interested in helping, contact Shae. Will need help with various projects, including deciding which tools go where in the new/old space
    • Tool cage limbo bucket tools will be removed, check it regu
  • Please no tin cans in the aluminum recycling bin, and no aluminum food trays either
    • When we have a forge, we can melt our own aluminum cans
  • Jewelry and small metals office hours happen this Saturday at 3
    • Come check out the tools and discuss possible programming for the future
  • A member has given us some tools
  • Looking for an orange plastic deadblow hammer
    • Sounds like it might be in the shop
  • Lockpicking - come pick locks and learn, tomorrow, 7 - 9 pm
  • Python Office Hours, 7 -9 pm, come play with any programming language, bring a laptop and questions or answers to questions that others might have
  • Weekly music night is tomorrow at 7 pm - CAJOO - cable access jam office hours. Bring an instrument, talent or experience not required
  • It's a potluck tonight - as it is every fifth Tuesday of the month
    • Jennie is going to make death star waffles tonight, Arturo will make hot dogs, Will will restock the soda fridge
    • Thanks to those who brought potluck items tonight!
