Electronic logging/ISBN tags

Might it make more sense to get a scanner that reads ISBNs so we can have an electronic database and tracking? Or is that part of the scope of what Skittles is planning? (Or, if the collection is small enough, maybe leaving it old-school is more efficient than trying to make an electronic solution.) --A. Catherine Noon

From what I understand, this supplies will allow people to check out books and take them home. The card stays at PS:1 so that we know who has the book. It is decidedly low tech so that people won't have to fiddle with a computer just to borrow a book, hopefully encouraging its use due to its simplicity. Justin (talk) 13:51, 12 March 2014 (CDT)

Databases

When I was in grad school, our library had access to a number of online databases (the usual stuff like Lexis/Nexis but also science-specific/special interest ones). Does it make sense to have a discussion about purchasing membership in some databases of interest/use to the membership for use by the membership collectively? I would imagine there are engineering and other such databases that members might get use from. --A. Catherine Noon

I have linked http://www.doaj.org/ on the library page since that's free. Some of those databases can be really expensive, especially if they include access to full articles from academic journals. I may do some research on that later, but for right now, I just want to get the checkout system set up. --Skittles

I would say that this might be a cool idea, but it's off topic for this vote discussion. Possibly the topic for a different vote proposal if someone does the research. Justin (talk) 14:24, 12 March 2014 (CDT)

Scope of Collection

Do we want to include the Area-specific books in the library catalog/checkout system?--A. Catherine Noon

I have been asking the area hosts. I just got the OK to tag the crafts area and the electronics area. I plan to put the red dots on books that shouldn't be checked out without permission. All that information will be on the Library Red Dots page. --Skittles

RE: database/electronic tracking

As far I know, no one is pursuing those options at this time. It might be worth raising the idea on Talk:Library, or talking to Skittles directly.
