This page is a place to gather all our dreams and desires for the new tool crib, which will primarily be the responsibility of the new area host. They're likely to come into the position with a plan, but documenting the needs and wants of the membership might help guide that plan.

Tools we need

The new tool crib should probably come with an inventory of our existing tools, followed by a significant purchase of new hand tools. This is a list of member recommendations.

  • DeWalt 12v Max tools are fantastic: they're lightweight, powerful and as durable as you'd expect DeWalt tools to be. --Dbever (talk) 13:07, 5 January 2014 (CST)
  • Husky Phillips & Slotted Screwdriver Set (9-Piece) because interchangeable bits are -always- lost. Fixed screwdrivers are inexpensive enough that they can be repurchased as needed. Several sets like this would be a good start. $10 a set. --Dbever (talk) 13:07, 5 January 2014 (CST)
    • This. We need 5 sets of them. Each screwdriver needs to be color coded for the set it belongs too. Each needs to administer a painful electric shock to the member who doesn't return it to its set after use. Jason (talk) 13:59, 25 February 2014 (CST)
  • Nichelson 8 Inch Mill Bastard File Files are cheap, very hard, and can cut almost anything. And sharp ones are safer. $4 each. --Nerobro (talk) 09:29, 10 January 2014 (CST)
    • Add several card files so files can be resurrected after they get filled with pine tar and chewing gum. Jason (talk) 13:59, 25 February 2014 (CST)
  • Set of wood rasps so people don't misuse files on wood. Jason (talk) 13:59, 25 February 2014 (CST)
  • Hit the reset button and get several sets of drill bits marked for wood/metal and color coded to correspond to the drill bit caddy currently sitting on the small drill press bench. Jason (talk) 13:59, 25 February 2014 (CST)
  • Several decent Johnson cast magnesium combination squares, several new carpenter's try squares (ours aren't actually square). Jason (talk) 13:59, 25 February 2014 (CST)
  • Good quality ripping, crosscut, miter, razor/dovetail, and coping saws. Jason (talk) 13:59, 25 February 2014 (CST)
    • Japanese ripping and dovetail saws have inexpensive replaceable/repairable blades.
    • Saw tooth setter and triangular files to be hidden or labeled to be used only by people who know what they're doing. Jason (talk) 13:59, 25 February 2014 (CST)
  • Hit the reset button on crescent wrenches and socket sets — get several decent sets and color code. Also, electric shock. Jason (talk) 14:01, 25 February 2014 (CST)
  • Grinder accessories
    • Maybe a new pedestal grinder.
    • Coarse and medium wheels for pedestal grinder.
    • New wheels for spur dresser (grinder dressing tool)
    • Diamond wheel dresser.
