Prerequisites to Authorization

Tier 1 Cold Metals For basic cutting and drilling of stock using Johnson Saw, DoAll Bandsaw Saw, and Drill Press.

ShopBot Part 1 The Shopbot will familiarize you to using CNC and other necessary concepts such as feeds and speeds, tool choice, etc. Only part 1 of Shopbot Authorization is required and will eventually be replaced by a distinct CAD/CAM course (TBD, 2019). We also strongly recommend completing Shopbot Part 2 especially if you are new to CNC milling, as the Shopbot cuts more forgiving materials, as well as more forgiving feed and speed rates.

Bridgeport Knee Mill Allows you to square your material for the Tormach as well as learn basic, manual milling operations. Also provides more practice with speeds, feeds and drilling operations. For those who are not already authorized when planning our their Tormach authorization, we recommend taking the Materials, Speeds and Feeds Reference Guides Section of the Tormach Canvas course to get a more thorough introduction to Feeds & Speeds.

CAM Proficiency This recommendation has been upgraded to a requirement as understanding CAM methodologies are as important to the use of this machine as milling is. Fusion 360 is the software we will be teaching and authorizing with. It is currently free for hobbyists and startups and can be downloaded here. More details about this component of pre-authorization coming soon. For now, Shopbot, Part 1 fulfills this requirement. However, for novices we recommend referencing the additional resources below.

Authorization

There are 3 phases for Tormach Authorization and they must be completed in order.

1. Canvas Course The Online Canvas Course will cover topics such as Feeds & Speeds, Workholding, Tooling, and PathPilot (Tormach's CNC controller software). The course should take 3 hours to complete, not including CAM assignment.

2. Provisional Machine Authorization There is a practical machine authorization component in the more traditional style of PS1 authorizations. Provisional authorization is granted at this stage. This component is 2-3 hours in length.

3. Personal Project Full authorization is granted after participants submit a personal project with CAM code for review through Canvas and then run the job successfully on their own with the supervision of an authorizer. This stage may be repeated up to 3 times if necessary.


Using Canvas for Tracking Authorizations Canvas is how you will track your authorization through-out all 3 phases of authorization. You have a Canvas account already associated with your PS1 Wild Apricot account. Your Canvas login and password is the same as your Wild Apricot login and password. (If you don’t remember your Wild Apricot password, or you are sure you are entering the same password in Canvas as for your WA account, you can reset it through Canvas via "Forgot password?" and get a password change via your email. This should correct either problem.)

To start the authorization process, you must go to Canvas and select the CNC:Tormach course via "Join this Course". You may start the online course material at any time, but must complete all elements of the online course up until the Harbinger CAM project before being eligible for the practical machine component of authorization.

Scheduling

The Tormach is the first machine with scheduling at PS1. We are currently using Skedda at http://pumpingstationone.skedda.com. The guidelines are as below and only those who are fully authorized may access the scheduler.

Tormach Scheduling Guidelines

-Reservations can be made from 2 weeks out to 12 hours before the time you would like to schedule.

-Any unscheduled time will be on a first-come, first serve basis like all other machines at PS1.

-Please account for clean-up time in your reservation and be considerate of others when scheduling as there is no current time length limit for reservations.

-If you finish your time early, end your appointment so others know the machine is free.

Additional Resources & Support

PS1 will be holding monthly Tormach User Meetings for Chicago Tormach users. These events will be open to the Public.

There is also a Google Group mailing list you can join for discussing anything Tormach-related including troubleshooting, Sprutcam, Fusion 360, and different Tormach models.

You can learn a great deal about the CAM aspect by training yourself up in Fusion 360's CAM mode. mHUB has two Tormach milling machines available to their members, with regular training sessions.
