Vote to subsidize the attendance of up to two PS:1 members at the first annual Nation of Maker conference.

This vote would authorize the board to select up to two people to attend NOMCON on behalf of PS:1. Attendees will be reimbursed $600 to help offset conference fees, airfare, and housing costs; or $1,000 if the attendee in question leads a session or gives a presentation.

Attendees agree to document learnings from the conference and provide a report to the PS:1 membership. Because a primary goal is for attendees to act as delegates of PS:1 and to establish connections with organizational leaders from other makerspaces, attendees will be chosen from among current board members and area hosts. Interested candidates should contact [[email protected]] by Monday, April 30 to explain why they are a good candidate to attend.

Cost: Up to $2,000.00 (most likely $1,200)

Background

Nation of Makers is a national collective of makerspaces “dedicated to helping support America’s maker organizations through advocacy, resource sharing, and the building of community within the maker movement and beyond.” They are holding their first annual conference this year from June 9-10 in Santa Fe, NM. The theme is "intentional inclusion."

The working agenda for the conference includes many topics of relevance to PS:1, such as:

  • Managing the purchase of a physical space
  • Boosting diversity and inclusiveness
  • Improving governance and succession
  • Ensuring safety

NOMCON also provides PS:1 with the opportunity to develop connections with the broader maker movement and represent the maker community from one of the largest cities in the United States.

This is the first ever NOMCON and also the first time PS:1 would send representatives to such an event. As such, it is very much an experiment. One of the goals of attendance would be determining how best to get value from an event like NOMCON and to decide what future participation should be.
