Background

Theo brought in a shop coffee roaster in hopes to verify it works and then host a class in coffee roasting. If there is enough interest, he will arrange to leave it at PS1 for others to use. However, PS1 does not have appropriate electrical, so he got a quote: $900. He will pay $400 of that, leaving $500 for PS1 plus up to $100 additional expenses.

This is a vote to upgrade PS1’s electrical as follows:

PS1's second floor catwalk electrical panel, P2-2, is a 3-Phase 208/120 "High Leg Delta" panel. In addition to the Bridgeport, Servers, and miscellaneous outlets which it currently supplies, it previously supplied an Induction Cooktop, a Lasercutter and the Kitchen Oven; it no longer supplies those devices, and hasn't done for quite some time (though the Electrical wiki is not updated). As a result, there is ample capacity on the existing panel to supply a Coffee Roaster or other large service devices in their stead. PS1's wiring from the panel, however, appears insufficient to the task.

This is a proposal to install commercial gauge wire and conduit from Panel 2-2; this vote also proposes installing a 60 amp breaker to replace two 20 amp breakers previously associated with either the Induction Cooktop or the Oven. Work will be done by a qualified professional electrician who has provided a quote for his services of $900. Theo Tetzlaff has an interest in providing a coffee roaster for members to use in the space, which would benefit from this electrical work; as a result, he is willing to offer to pay $400 towards the cost of PS1's upgrade to our infrastructure. In addition, there may or may not be an opportunity to fix certain code violations that currently exist, such as a non-GFCI outlet above the sink, under the same work order. No unnecessary or detrimental changes would be made, however.

Synopsis

This vote authorizes PS1 to pay reasonable expenses for professional electrical services. These services are estimated per a quote to cost PS1 $500 given Theo's offer to pay $400 towards the quoted cost of $900. $600 is authorized in order to account for potential reasonable overages.

Language of the Vote

This vote is to approve an expense authorization of $600 for the upgrade of PS1's wiring and to install a 60 amp breaker on Panel 2-2 by a qualified professional electrician.
