Wood Shop Dust Collection
Our shop needs *real* dust collection. Here lies the start of plans to rectify that.
Dust Collector
http://www.clearvuecyclones.com/cv-max/13-cv-max-three-phase-with-filters.html 5 HP motor (Leeson 132242.00 frame 184TC, 86.5% efficiency) This dust collector will have sufficient flow with two open gates. Occasional use with three gates open is acceptable. The 'nano' filter option ($100) is recommended. Collector cost with nano filter is $2070.
A whole room dust filter may also be in order.
Clearvue technical support does not recommend mixing wood and metal dust in the same collection system.
Ducting
6" sewer & drain pipe for drops
8" sewer & drain pipe for main lines
Automating this stuff
No one will use it if it doesn't turn on automatically. It *must* be automatic. I've read that using less than 3" ducts with a large 15-16" blower is a problem.
I drew up some plans based on these resources:
This is a 2.5" duct, 'cause I originally planned to use the shop vac. The hole can just be enlarged to 3" w/o other changes. For 4" or 6" gates, the plates should be enlarged, and linkages will probably need lengthening. I made a lot of paper models to get the geometry right. Someone with experience modelling moving parts with CAD could probably do the scaling more quickly.
Machines that need collection
- Table saw (needs retrofit 6" pipe inside and out, maybe 5" and an overhead 3" collector)
- Jointer
- Mitre saw (needs a shroud built)
- Bandsaw (needs front plate of drive wheel replaced with something allowing for collection)
- Belt/disk sander (probably needs a shroud for the belt, or just a better sander)
- Planer (could probably use side shrouds)
- Stationary and pedestal grinders (hot metals)
- Grinder (cold metals)
- CNC mini mill.
- Wood lathe (needs a shroud)
- Drill presses
While all of these machines need dust/debris collection of some sort. Some of them may be better served by water buckets instead of a central dust vacuum. For instance grinders should have their exhausts feed into a bucket with water in it.
Electrical Needs
The dust collector should be on it's own circuit, switched on by a relay. Switches should be conveniently located near machines, or interlocked to certain machines.
Costs
Clearvue CVMAX 3 phase with nano filters $2070 Filter clean out box $80 blast gates dust collection drum x pieces of 6"x10' pvc pipe y pieces of 8"x10' pvc pipe mounting hardware $200
Operating cost estimate: 3.24kw X .12$/kwh = $.39/hour (filters last indefinitely with regular maintenance)
