Background

We have many members who are interested in making jewelry at PS:1. In addition, visitors often ask if we have tools for jewelry. Jewelry making capability will serve current members and attract new members without taking up much space.

Initially, jewelry will be co-located with cold metals and be funded through the cold metals budget. In the future, it may be spun off as its own area. Its location after the sprawl will be evaluated by the space committee and voted on by the membership.

The list of tools to purchase with prices: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kTsQcn4tDehJOBl2HOE3yqQdVqpHvjPThCzodBS4Tio/edit?usp=sharing

The prices are worst-case, largely based on a supplier called Rio Grande. We will look for better deals.

We already have some tools that can be used for jewelry making: hydraulic press, flex shaft, miscellaneous hand tools, bench blocks, vibratory polisher, diamond saw, laser cutter & milling machines (for dies).

A few members said they may donate or loan: rolling mill, cabbing machine, faceting machine, hand tools, buffing machine, kiln.

Language

Authorize the Board of Directors to spend up to $1345 on tools and supplies for jewelry making. Authorization expires 6 months after the vote is accepted.

Results

38 Members were present for the vote, so quorum is met.

  • For: 36
