Why the mailbox?

We’ve had a serious problem keeping track of mail. The old system had a catch basin for the mail that worked sometimes. When it did work people would still pick up the mail and carry it around leaving it in random places throughout the building. The amount of time we’ve heard that mail was taken to give to someone causing it to take longer than if they would have just grabbed it themselves is astonishing. After the plastic bins broke the mail would just dump onto the floor in the entryway, further increasing the problem of mail ending up other places in the building or being outright lost. Hundreds of dollars in late fees have been spent due to only receiving the late notices from state and local governments instead of the original bills that just never got found. Tax filings have also been late and incurred late fees due to not receiving things the state has sent us for review.

Why is it a safe? isn’t that a bit much?

Yes, it’s way more than we needed. There were several designs before the safe, mainly built from wood. The safe was made available so cheap that it wasn’t worth the effort to build a box when a steel one could be had with less work and effort.

Why is it so complicated?

“It needed to be for the project to hold my attention enough to see it through to completion. If it didn’t have electronics in it I probably wouldn’t have ever finished it” - James Lamken
