Background
In 2017, Open House Chicago brought over 600 visitors to PS1. As our largest public outreach event of the year, OHC offer a unique opportunity to interact with interested members of the public. Unfortunately, we had no infrastructure in place at the time to capture contact information for visitors or otherwise attempt to engage with them after their visit.
PS1 is funded exclusively through membership dues, which pay for both ongoing operational expenses and new equipment. In fact, a certain number of new member sign-ups are needed each month to offset the loss of existing members.
The 2018 OHC event offers a chance to experiment with new promotional and outreach initiatives. One such initiative, the subject of this vote, involves a time-limited promotional giveaway intended to encourage interested visitors to make an immediate financial commitment to PS:One by purchasing a membership.
The promotion may result in a jump in new member applications, with work required by additional authorizers and other volunteers to handle the increased volume. On the other hand, people who join at the Open House Chicago event itself will likely not all start making use of club resources immediately upon joining, giving us time to process and incorporate the new members.
Language
This vote allows the board to hold a promotional membership period in which people who visit Pumping Station: One as part of the 2018 Open House Chicago can receive up to two months free Starving Hacker membership upon paying for the first month of a new membership. The promotion can be granted to a maximum of fifty people and is only available to new first-time members. This vote is valid for 4 months after the 2018 Chicago Open House.
