Area Rules
- Safety first — use at minimum all required safety gear for the tool you are using. Always wear safety glasses. Worn alone, your acrylic eyeglass lenses are dangerous. Know where the closest fire extinguisher is as well as the first aid kit. And pay attention to what you are doing. For your own safety, do not work around people misusing tools. For the safety of others, don't misuse tools. It's Ok to ask others for help, people are pretty friendly (but it's good etiquette to wait if they're using powertools).
- Clean up after yourself — use a brush or the Shop Vac to clean up your chips and throw small cutoffs away. Set useful cutoffs aside in the lumber area if you think someone might be able to use them (but we reallllly don't want your garbage). Make sure power cords don't obstruct aisles
- Check the Dust Collector [1]to see if it needs emptying
- Be respectful of others using this space by following TidySpace procedures — always fill out a Parking Request form — Name, phone number, email, and date it each time you work on it.
- Put things back when you're done — Let's try to make sure everyone can find the tool they are looking for once you are finished. This includes all power tool accessories and hand tools.
- Respect all the tools — Do not ever put your weight behind a piece you're feeding through any power tool. If you ever see anyone doing this, it's Ok to correct them. Use your hands or a push stick, if appropriate, to move your piece through — the machine will tell you how quickly it wants to work. Only use tools you are certified to use.
- If something breaks, put a note on it and contact the Area Host, don't just leave it for the next person to find. It's unsafe and disrespectful. Be excellent to each other.
- Make awesome things and let us know if you'd like to boast.
Authorizations
There is usually a Wood Shop authorization once a week, listed on the calendar. The process begins in a canvas course. Go to https://canvas.pumpingstationone.org/courses/40 and self enroll. There are readings on safety, processes rules and... of course... all of the stationary tools in the basic authorization. Study the material and take the quizzes.
Then book a hands on Authorization session in the Canvas Calendar. Out of courtesy please email Ralph (rebrendler@gmail.com, Paul (paulvanlake @gmail.com) or Gary (grnewhouse@gmail.com)as appropriate for questions (to let us know that you are in the pipeline, questions, etc).
If you pass both the online and the hands on portions....CONGRATULATIONS!! You are among the select club of PS:1 Woodworkers (no accompanying parties or awards or libations will necessarily follow.)
Come wearing appropriate clothing and grab a set of eye protection and ear protection when you arrive. It's extremely likely that this authorization will meet every Thursday at 7:30 pm ... in the Wood Shop see the ps:1 google calendar.
Only approved proctors may authorize and for the beginning of this new process, Ralph or Paul will lead your HandsOn session. Proctors are identified on the wiki page for each tool requiring authorization. See generally at the bottom of this page Category:Wood Shop for a list.

Project Storage
New tidy space policy.
We need to more closely follow PS1 Tidy Space Policy, things are just too crowded and too many "abandoned" projects are using space that should be for authorized temporary storage (up to 30 days). Michelle DeLeon (pistola13d@gmail.com) and Gary Newhouse(grnewhouse@gmail.com) are working to clear up space for you to store your "masterpieces in process".
Parking Permit
What it is
This green tag* should be placed on any item, project or materials used for personal or group projects, which are being actively worked and/or are too large to store in personal locker/shelf space. Items with a properly issued parking permit must not be left on a worktable or in a walkway. Items that are left with or without a Parking Permit may be moved to Temporary Storage by anyone at any time. Members are able to write their own ticket for parking, valid for a maximum of 72 hours unless an Area Host agrees to a longer period of time not exceeding 30 days. Members are able to renew Parking Permits themselves given that they are physically in at PS1 to do so. Area Hosts are able to limit renewals at their discretion if appropriate to maintain organization of Temporary Storage.
Parking Ticket
What it is
Red tickets (https://github.com/pumpingstationone/ps1-design/blob/master/export/red-parking-tag.pdf) should be placed on any item, project, or materials found in the space without a permit or with an improperly filled or expired permit. If materials are obstructing a walkway, common work areas or work surfaces, or is otherwise stored in a manner that is a hindrance of the use of PS1 by other members, anyone is able to respectfully move items to Temporary Storage where an authorized person will ticket items if they are unclaimed. As stated above, items must be labeled with a Parking Pass and stored properly when not actively being worked on. Personal storage is exempted from the Parking Ticket process and improperly utilized personal storage is covered in its own section below.
What happens to ticketed items?
The ticket can be struck by the issue of a valid parking permit, or in the case of space property, proper labeling and storage. Ticketed material may be moved out of the way or placed in Temporary Storage, but must not be moved to Salvage until the 72 hours after the ticket is issued. The issuer, and/or Area Host, accepts the obligation to make a good-faith effort to contact the person responsible for the material (if known) to let them know their material should be retrieved or marked with a valid parking permit. If the owner is legitimately unavailable to take care of their materials within the 72 hours, the issuer and/or Area Host may make arrangements with the owner at their discretion, but are under no obligation to do so.
Salvage
What it is?
Salvage is a clearly marked and well lit set of shelves dedicated to almost-trash. The designated spaces are:
- the rightmost portion of the plywood rack,
The area immediately right of that is now for storage of four PS1 owned ladders
Anyone may remove anything from Salvage at any time.
We are in the process of implementing this in the Woodshop. We will make every effort to make this transition as easy as possible ..

For best results, have all the materials on hand when you start a project and set aside time to finish it quickly so we don't have projects laying all over the shop, half done, for months.
Safety
Some safety equipment is currently available:
- safety glasses and goggles
- gloves (including welding gloves)
- respirator
- ear protection
- painter suits
- welding masks
- fire extinguishers
Users must use this equipment as required for each tool.
If you see someone using the equipment improperly, wait for a safe time to either show them how to do it right, or ask them to stop and seek certification. Don't sneak up on people or interrupt them while they're using power tools. Notify the Area Host if anyone is abusing, damaging, or using tools in an inappropriate fashion.
If the smoke/CO2 detector goes off, stop what you are doing. Do not shut it off and go back to work until you take a break for at least 15 minutes to be sure there aren't any harmful fumes.
Woodworking skills
Milling lumber To produce the quality joints needed for strong and attractive projects, the natural warping and twist of lumber must be dealt with. The typical process for producing milled lumber starts at the jointer.
- Joint a face and an edge, using the jointer fence. This will give you two surfaces that are 90 degrees to each other.
- Then use the planer to make the unmilled face parallel and coplanar to the face milled in the first step.
- The final edge can be produced on the table saw. Use the rip fence to clean up the final edge.
More techniques for milling lumber can be found in this video from Marc Spagnuolo, a woodworking podcaster of note.
Tools
While plenty of tools are available, you probably want to put together your own toolbox/kit of things to have handy. See this suggested list for the woodshop: Recommended Gear/Kit#Wood Shop
All equipment in the workshop has been tagged Category:Shop Equipment.
All equipment requires certification to be used. Please see the individual tool pages for information on who can certify you to use these tools. We have a number of jigs and sleds for the tablesaw. https://wiki.pumpingstationone.org/Tablesaw_jigs_and_sleds
and for the bandsaw and Planer.
Using the tools
If it belongs to PS:One, please be nice to the tools. If they belong to a member who is awesome enough to loan us their personal gear, make sure you treat it extra nice and also, get their permission first.
Please be respectful and aware of others working in the shop at the same time you are. If you are throwing sparks, throw them away from other people. If you are walking around with hot metal, say something so others know where you are and don't get branded. If you are going to start making a lot of noise, let other people know so they can get some ear protection, don't just deafen them.
Sharpening tools
Sharpening is best left to people who know what they're doing. Destroying an edge or a tool's temper will require someone else to deal with the problem, and that sucks. If you know what you're doing, you'll know what you need and can ask someone who also looks like they know what they're doing to help you find it.
Sharpening power tool blades is even more best left to people who know what they're doing. Let the area host know if a power tool's blades need to be serviced.
Shop Safety Best Practices
Pumping Station: One is not responsible for making sure you operate tools safely. This wiki is edited by volunteers who do not speak for Pumping Station:One. For a primer on general shop safety best practices, have a look at the EPA's recommendations and Pratt's orientation manual. Various A&M schools also have excellent recommendations.
Budgets
We are working on a real time accounting of budgets and expenditures.

Wood Shop Improvement Projects
The Wood Shop has lots of ongoing improvement projects to help organize and de-clutter the workspace - feel free to help out!
- fix rolling fire door rail (roll door to right, replace missing bolts holding rail to wall will bring that rail plumb again, test)
- straighten out door counterweight cover to left of rolling fire door (remove appx six lag bolts, take cover off, beat the shit outa it to make it square, replace it on wall).
- repair left dust collector door. (Remove stop from top rail, roll door to left to free the center trolley, tighten nuts to relevel/plumb door so that it is plumb-relative to right door, replace end stop)
- use hydraulic cement or such to reattach rolling door rails to wall in dock. There are new bolts there but existing old bolts need to be reattached to wall at right side
- DONE Finish hooking up the dust collection
- DONE Repair the floor on the flat sheet vertical rack (the bottom is broken) and through away the junk and edit the ticketed items.
- DONE Incorporate a rack for tall sticks of lumber ( 8ft. 2x4's, long rips of narrow material).
- DONE Reorganize "salvage" material storage
- NOW: right quarter of ply rack,
- small pieces to right of ply rack,
- NOW: right quarter of ply rack,
- DONE Get the Bosch Sliding Compound Miter Saw station built.
- DONE Build GoogleCal for Major tool Preventive Maintenance with Mfg. recommendations for maintenance tasks
- DONE Jigs and fences for the Rockwell Delta 20" Bandsaw.
- DONE Plumb in some air lines. Paul Van Lake anchored the line on the wall next to the ladders so maybe we can tap off of that.
- Shop signs. If a member is looking for a practice project post laser or ShopBot authorization, have them make pertinent/helpful tool and warning signs.
- DONE Go through the cabinet under the miter saw and clean out the junk glue and useless material.
- DONE Build shelves under work benches for member projects once racks are made to store glue clamps.
- DONE Design a better method to store the clamps that are in bins on the floor.
- DONE Fix the cable on the Grizzly 6" jointer - the ground wire is exposed.
- DONE Fix the plugs on the northwest wall. They are hanging and it is hard sometimes to plug in the jointer without the cable falling off.
- Build an enclosed cabinet for the router table to prevent dust and organize bits and tools.
- DONE Add racks above sanders router and drill press
- Repair replace worktables
- DONE prepare vote for new equipment (SawStop, lathe, racks) TO BE DELIVERED /INSTALLED DEC. (SAW, RACKS)and jan.(lathe)
